Lebenszyklen von Geschäftsmodellen werden in der globalisierten Welt immer kürzer.
by Martin Czerweny von Arland 21 Jun, 2021

family history

The Family Czerweny Edle von Arland

The Czerweny family were big industrialists in the match industry and originally came from the south-east Bohemian town of Trautenau in what is now the Czech Republic. The son-in-law of the founding father of the match empireFranz Czerweny (born March 26, 1848, † April 13, 1921) was made a kuk commercial councilor in 1907 and an officer's cross holder of the Franz Joseph Order in 1911 because of his outstanding achievements. Among other things, he donated a workers' dormitory in Deutschlandsberg, which still exists today, and Arnfels Castle, including an outbuilding, for charitable and/or non-profit purposes. He also gave the community of Deutschlandsberg a source area for the Mäktische high spring water pipeline with a protective area of 23 hectares. Because of his services, he was knighted by Emperor Karl I and awarded the title "Edler von Arland". The name Arland stands for the cities of Arnfels and Landsberg (Deutschlandsberg). The motto of the family is: "Free the eye, clear the will, complete the deed.

The founder of the match empire was his father-in-law Florian Pojatzi (born January 15, 1830; † August 17, 1917) who founded the Deutschlandsberg match factory in 1856 and expanded it in 1881 to include a factory in Stainz-Stallhof. These were soon among the most modern match companies in the monarchy. From 1880 onwards, the companies employed around 700 workers. Another 1,000 people found a good side income by making the wooden cans needed for packaging. Pojatzi, whose social services were exemplary for the workers, withdrew from the business in 1892. Since 1876 his son-in-law Franz Czerweny von Arland was a public shareholder of the Fl. Pojatzi & Comp. and from 1899 sole owner.

initiated in 1903 Franz Czerweny von Arland the merger of all major factories SOLO-Zündwaren- und Wichsefabriken AG. Before the merger, the Fl. Pojatzi & Comp. already more than 1200 employees and a turnover of over 2 million crowns. These consisted of Deutschlandsberg and Stainz ("Pojatzi"), Graz, Klagenfurt ("Sirius" from 1920), St. Pölten (1921-25 "Orion"), Hallwang near Salzburg, Vienna ("Pollack") and Linz ("Union "). This created one of the largest companies in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy with 3,000 employees and a turnover of 7 million crowns for the production of matches, which produced until 1982. As the last location in Austria, the production of matches was abandoned in Deutschlandsberg in the same year.

The Czerweny von Arland family achieved world fame through their two siblings Victor Franz Florian (b. 1877; † 1956) and Robert Franz Anton, (b. 1878; † 1962) in 1898 with the development of the 1. “Czerweny” automatic match machine which was given a place of honor in the technical museum in Vienna and can still be visited today. This epoch-making Czerweny automatic machine produced a million matches an hour. The patented machine was produced in large numbers from 1908 and is still in use today.
